I have three kids and one is in a wheelchair. We live in New York City and I take them everywhere. My husband is tired of listening to me rant about how hard it is to get a wheelchair to the gem exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History, so he suggested that I start a blog. I am promising to try to focus on what is really great in New York City for families with wheelchairs. Because that's what we are - a family with a wheelchair.
Hey Michelle
ReplyDeleteWe are a family with a wheelchair too. Manual, and a motorized scooter. We use the scooter more since Jax gets tired arms but also walks a lot when she can. We live in Park Slope, Brooklyn at its brownstone studded, many stepped best. Love your posts. we juice the city for all its worth and visit many places accessible and inaccessible. We can often carry our daughter, 6 and skinny and able to walk short distances which makes things easier but as she ages she won't want us to do that - and she will be heavier. She has SMA. Spinal Muscular Atrophy, so the disease will progress as well.
Anyway, glad to see another NYC mom going to Coney Island, the Rubin, etc and paying attention to accessibility and bitchy about it!
I know there enough of us out there, but I never run into anyone so it is nice to hear your blog posts about it.
where might I ask does your son go to school? Jax is in private school since local public school inaccessible and nearest accessible one is not so hot. you mentioned "many kids in wheelchairs" at his school, made me curious.
the limelight having no elevator is just ridiculous!

hmm, I am reflecting that perhaps my comment ("bitchy about it" )was not in the positive spirit you are attempting to keep your blog. sorry, I am not that evolved as of yet.
